Just learnt of some shocking news about Joyce Hatto, the late English pianist whose posthumous recorded legacy caused such a stir last year. Her repertoire was even more vast than that of Setrakian, and many recordings have been praised into heaven. For example the complete cycles of Liszt Etudes, Albeniz Iberia, Granados Goyescas, and the Chopin-Godowsky etudes. It now turns out that at least some of these have been faked. I read about this too. Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

I read some more and it was altogether a bit too much to be plausible. The complete piano works of Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Debussy, Prokofiev, complete Mozart and Beethoven sonatas, a large part of Liszt's oeuvre, all the Rach and Brahms concertos, the list goes on and on... And that is just the 'core' repertoire. There seems to be no doubt she was a great pianist but this hoax is not doing her legacy a service.... Sad story indeed.

Isn't it interesting that you made a reference to Setrakian in this post about Hatto? :!:

No big coincidence
I already had a lot of doubts about S. when I wrote that. But the remark itself is pretty factual and innocuous and could have been true anyway.

With this whole Setrak scandal at the site today, for once in my life, I'm GLAD to not be a perfect pianist. At least no one will ever think my recordings aren't actually me!!! I guess the saying "Too good to be true" exists for a reason.

Suddenly rejoicing in mediocracy,

Here, here, Nicole!

(That looks funny written out like that. I mean, I totally agree with you.)

Well at the very least, it presents a good reason why one should not rely soley on recordings to guide your interpretation... you might just copy their style and then people will suspect you are not the one playing.

No problem for you 'cause people are already suspecting you are Alban Berg. :D

(means: correct your signature... )

Possibly because it is "hear, hear". ;)

I agree as well.

The same goes for my many mediocre recordings. I really should refresh some stuff.
