The pedal mechanism of the fortepiano in use in Beethoven's day was different to today's modern piano.
The indication "senza sordidi" in its literal translation is meaningless on today's instrument.
Today the sustaining pedal is used, changing it as the harmony alters in order to avoid blurring.
The soft "una corde" pedal is used at the performar's discretion; however I think most players don't use it in this movement.
