I had always known Svetlanov as one of the great Russian conductors, right up there with Kondrashin and Rozhdestvenky. So I was awed to learn he was also a consummate pianist, who performed the complete (!) solo works of Medtner. As if that is not enough he was also a composer and a good singer (accompanying himself in Medtner songs).
