Sad times for Medtnerites.... Australian pianist Geoffrey Tozer, one of Medtner's foremost interpreters and advocates, died last week of a liver disease, not even 55 years old. Staggeringly talented, he played and performed all Beethoven concertos by age 14. A great loss. I happened to hear this announded on the radio the other day after his performance of Medtner's Sonata-Ballada op.27 (I did not know this work and was convinced I was listening to two pianists.... not so).

So sad.

Thread at Piano World.

There is that thread at Piano World about it. There's even going to be an electronic recital in the Pianist Corner in his honor featuring obscure or underappreciated composers. I don't have time to participate at all, but perhaps some one here might like to. :)

Best regards,

That Geoffrey Tozer died so early in his successful life is tragic. I have one of his Medtner CDs, and it is superb, but not surprising where he was considered to be Australia's finest concert pianist.

The organizer of the memorial e-cital at Piano World contacted me asking if I could participate, and I was pleased to agree to do it.

Oy. He was awfully good, and did a serious service to Medtner's music. Wish I could have heard him in person.
