Post subject: Listz's 3 versions of his 12 Etudes
PostPosted: Mon Apr 09, 2007 6:54 pm
Does anybody know where I could find a recording of Liszt's 1st and 2nd version of his Transcendental Etudes? I've searched amazon and many other sites and cannot find anything other than the 3rd ("final") well known versions.

I have heard that the 2nd versions have become almost unplayable on modern pianos, and that only on keyboards with a very light action (such as pre-1850 pianos) can these studys be executed. It is this reason that I would love to hear what they sound like!

Thanks

Andy

Well I'm replying to my own post because I HAVE found a recording of the 1837 version of the Transcendentals (or Grand Etudes as they were called then). I have discovered that the Australian pianist Leslie Howard has recorded every single Liszt work on 96 CDs! How did I not know about this before???!!!

...so courtesy of Amazon.com - my CD (plus the original Paganini etdues) are on there way! :)
