have two manuals. But one needs to be coupled to the pedal, because that has only subbass 16 of its own, and you most always need support from one of the manual couplers. This sometimes leads to overlapping notes which can often be accepted as a necessary evil, but in this case it would render useless some of the crucial pedal notes and this was unacceptable. In a chorale like this the pedal part is all-important, more so than all the doodlings of the hands.
