A very good recording of these extremely difficult etudes. Bartok himself stated “I cannot play the three Etudes. I haven’t played them–ever or anywhere–since 1918.”

The piano studies were written to teach students how to expand and contract their hand movements. The changing rhythms in the last piece also makes it challenging.

The recording is up on the site.

Yes I know it's extremely difficult etudes. for that I play them in Master Class to my Diploma students in Ganatchian music college when I was Director from 1987 till 1999.

I'd never heard these Etudes though I have looked at them on paper many times, and wondered what it would be like to try and play them. Even from the look of them, one can deduce these are real killers. They sound extremely well executed. It strikes me time and again how shockingly modern some of Bartok's early works are, considering their time of composition. He was a true pioneer for a while there. But I am very glad he came back to a more accessible style rooted in his great musical heritage. Had he continued in this abrasive style, he would be not very popular today.
