Hello,

I have heard the Devil's Staircase of Ligeti performed by Greg Anderson on Youtube.
And, I think, why not to learn a contempory piece but I am an amateur and I will prefer
to begin by a piece of Ligeti : I like this composer !

Have you a suggestion ? other etude ? The Staircase is too difficult for me.

I never heard of an easy piece by Ligeti. Perhaps you can build your skill with other composers and when you are good enough you can try to play the Staircase. That's just my advice.

Ligeti keyboard compositions are very difficult, but most pieces from his Musica ricercata can be played by a good amateur pianist.

Anyone care to share any of his scores?

I dont have his works in my collection.

I bought yesterday a CD with works and Musica Ricercata !
I will say my opinion of this CD, the pianist is Pierre-Laurent Aimard, do you know ? He have 'create' (?) a lot of pieces of Ligeti, isn't it ?

I have pdf's of the etudes and musica ricercata. Can't remember the site I got them from, I think it was a Spanish pianist with a LOT of stuff. I could upload them to the site if anybody's interested. I haven't tried any of it myself. Etudes are way out of reach, the ricercata looks (partly) manageable.


Yes, it is breathtaking. What a fabulous pianist, and what insanely diffiult music ! Also on YouTube is Volker Banfield performing (I think) all of the Ligeti etudes. Amazing too, he is of course a renowned 20th century specialist, and a super virtuoso.

If you like this music, check out Roger Wright's YouTube performance of Rzewski's Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues... here is one piece I'd want to play if I had the guts for it.

The slow etude "Arc-en-ciel" (n°5, I think) is definitely doable.

A friend of mine does "The devils stair-case" very well. He worked on only memorization constantly for about nine days he said, but didn't start to perform it until perhaps half a year after that...these pieces do take time to learn. However, you can always start with the "easier" etudes - the 2nd (cordes a vide) and 5th (arc-en-diel) from book 1. Even "fanfares" is pretty doable, at least comparing to some of the other etudes...

I have a sudden urge to go and learn some of the music in musica ricercata... it seems to be pretty well in my range. Those etudes just scare me though...
