Trio Sonatas

Bach's six sonatas for two keyboards and pedal, BWV 525-30, are usually refered to as the 'Organ Sonatas' or, more common, as the 'Trio Sonatas' because they are written in three fully independent parts. The final manuscript, which Bach compiled for his son Wilhelm Friedemann, dates from 1730 although as usual with Bach, many of the movements stem from earlier sources, possibly going back to his earliest years as an organ composer. These sonatas are the best examples of three-part organ writing, and belong to Bach's most popular organ works. In the words of Bach's biographer Forkel, 'their beauty can not be praised enough'.
